A Personal Story
Many people ask me, “How did you start?” “Who inspired you?” “Who did you learn from?” “What books did you read?”
As it is for many people seeking answers to life’s questions, it all started with a book. In my particular case it was Joseph Murphy’s THE POWER OF YOUR SUBCONSCIOUS MIND which I read and re-read. I was in my early 20s and had just settled in Canada after spending three years working my way around the world.
Being a rather rebellious teenager growing up in New Zealand where I was born, I’d decided at the age of 18 to see the world. All I had was a one way ticket from New Zealand to England and the equivalent of £100 in cash. Somehow I survived because by the time I was 21, I’d worked my way around the world twice travelling throughout Europe, the Middle East, Asia and North America before settling in Canada.
THE POWER OF YOUR SUBCONSCIOUS was an eye-opener. I wrote to the publishers asking if there was any one or any group nearby whom I could contact. They wrote back giving me the name of a Unity Centre in Montreal.
Devouring their library I learned from Joel Goldsmith, Emily Cady, Catherine Ponder, Charles Fillmore and Emmet Fox and then became acquainted with other groups such as Divine Science and Science of Mind. Through them I was introduced to the writings and teachings of Emma Curtis Hopkins, Florence Scovel Shinn, Gerald Jampolsky, Ernest Holmes and so many other incredible writers and teachers.
For several years my “day job” was as a newspaper reporter where I honed my writing skills. Eventually I opened my own global consulting business specialising in change management and management consulting. At the same time I took many New Thought courses and am grateful for the many wonderful teachers I had. Eric Butterworth, author of SPIRITUAL ECONOMICS, was one of several who had a major impact on me.
It seemed a natural progression to go from ‘learning’ to ‘teaching’. And so when I moved to Europe I trained first for my teacher’s licence with the United Centres for Spiritual Living (commonly known as Science of Mind) and then for my ministerial licence through Emerson. At the same time I’ve put my writing skills to use and have had several books published to help others on this incredible journey we’re all on.
Because London is, in many ways the hub of the world and home to every nationality and group imaginable, the next step was to establish an independent New Thought and Science of Mind Centre to teach and share what I’ve learned. Called The Centre for Positive Living it has grown and now has 12 teachers and over 40 different nationalities represented in our classes.
So each time the phone goes or I receive an email and hear or read, “Hello, I’ve just read a book by Louise Hay (or some other New Thought author) and I want to know more ….”, it takes me back to my own early seeking.
What have I learned? One thing is that I’ve got a hard head and it sometimes takes a while for a lesson to sink in! Sometimes it takes four or five times and I end up asking, “Why is the same thing always happening?
Joking aside, I’ve learned that everyone is my teacher – particularly those whom I seem not to be able to connect with. One of my teachers once said, “If you have a problem with someone, it’s not their fault. It’s an indication that there is something in you that needs to be healed.” Those words of wisdom I pass on in the sure knowledge of their veracity.
The main thing I have learned, and that which I teach and share with every student and person I meet, is that although each of us is special and unique, we’re also responsible for what goes on in our individual lives and the world in which we live. And so when we can change the way we look at people and things, then those people and things change because we’ve changed.
